Bitter-sweet pop with lashings of rock and a wee bit of groove…
Sleepy Age are one of the best bands in Christchurch at the moment and their latest self-titled EP totally reflects this.
My favourite from this release is ‘Paul Simon’, a song which had Ross from local bar ‘The Dux de Lux’ grooving into the room during a soundcheck one day saying that it sounded like the Happy Mondays. At the time I don’t think Sleepy Age lead man, Josh Burgess, could see this comparison but I think I can.
I reckon Josh is an amazing song writer. His songs have good structure, interesting lyrics and a nice contrast between loud and soft.
Sleepy Age is a 3 piece band and was founded by Josh (ex Bang Bang Eche) who wrote music on his laptop to pass time in planes/vans/bedrooms. On returning to New Zealand Burgess transformed garage band demo’s into indie pop tunes with a full band. Sleepy Age also won RDU 98.5 FM’s 2009 ‘Round Up’ band.
Josh and the band are in the middle of a national tour so if they’re playing near your house be sure to check them out and you can also download the EP for free from their bandcamp page. Tour details and download details below…

The past few weeks on Starlifter have been super, uber, duber, busy!!! For the past 2 weekends we have been broadcasting live rock gigs from around the Christchurch region. Our first was the Sleepy Age, Transistors and Magic Eye gig at The Dux De Lux. And last weekend we broadcast The Dance Asthmatics, Full Moon Fiasco, Secrets and Piha Rescue from El Santo in Lyttelton. A huge thanks to everyone who tuned in for those events. We had listeners not only from Christchurch but from all around the world. There was even a touching moment when Josh from Sleepy Age got the crowd at The Dux to sing Happy Birthday to Christchurch Indie Godmother, Fran, who was listening in the UK. Happy Birthday Fran! Over the coming months I’ll be adding various live sets and songs to the Starlifter Radio playlist, some will also be available for download, choice.
Also in the mix at the mo is the ITM DJ mix set from Melbourne based DJs Fromage Disco. I chucked this on while I cruised around town on my longboard a few weeks ago and it is l-o-v-e-l-y. Their sound is funky, soulful, groovey and moovey. This set is an excellent house party starter if your DJ hasn’t arrived yet and you’re still sorting out snacks for your guests.
But I’ve started this playlist with a few of my brit-pop favs from the 90s. The playlisted tracks from Sleeper, Echobelly and Suede came out on a compilation in NZ called ‘This is not America’ and was one of my favs when I was working at 92.3 The Most FM in New Plymouth. The song ‘great things’ has been a wonderfully positive song that has helped me get through this gloomy Christchurch winter.
So that’s the latest with dirty ole Starlifter. As usual if there’s anything you’d like to hear on the stream, you wanna get a hold of any live recordings or you just wanna say ‘holla’, we’re just a shirt message away.
