Mixtape Connection Vol. 4

Mixtape Connection Vol. 4 - Party Flyer

I was just going through all my old CDs and compilations I’ve put together over the years and came across this little bad boy, Mixtape Connection Vol. 4. This has recently been added to the StarlifterRadio.com playlist and is yours for the listening. This was a rad little mix I did for one of our Mixtape Connection club nights that we were hosting down at Capitol Bar back in 2005. Our special guest that night was Nick Harte aka Shocking Pinks (DFA Records). Now the tunes are great, my listing of the tracks somewhere useful — not so. So I don’t have any tracklisting for it, soz. The mix also contains a sample of James Murphy being interviewed by Nick D on 95bFM in Auckland, NZ. Rad!

Here are some links about some of what was going on in our Mixtape Connection crew at the time, including a few photos 🙂

Say Goodbye to the Sun NZ

She & Him - Volume Two

Well the New Zealand Summer is well and truely out-of-here. That means more time in the home studio listening to tunes, reading books and blogs, drinking mulled wine and hangin’ on the radio.

Here’s what’s new on the Starlifter Wireless.

Artists – Song – Release – Website
She & Him – In The Sun – Volume Two (LP) – http://www.sheandhim.com
The Mint Chicks – Say Goodbye – Bad Buzz (EP) – http://www.themintchicks.com
Tame Impala – Desire Be Desire Go – InnerSpeak (LP) – http://www.tameimpala.com
No Aloha – Where To Be – Home Demos – http://noaloha.bandcamp.com [FREE DOWNLOAD]

I’ve been listening to the She & Him album constantly for the last month, it’s 50/60s motown girlie group pop with a modern take. The Mint Chicks latest EP Bad Buzz comes on a USB that you can buy from www.musichy.pe – the song I’ve uploaded from that EP is also on the 60s pop tip, albeit a bit fuzzed up. The latest Tame Impala LP is AMAZING! Think Cream, Led Zep, The Beatle with a dash of LSD, YUMMY. And of course, No Aloha. This is the second song from their demo ep that I’ve added to Starlifter. They’re Christchurch boys doing the melodic rock thing, I’m really looking forward to more from these guys.

Starlifter Classic:
Garageland – Nude Star  – Last Exit To Garageland (LP)

Garageland were one of my favourite kiwi bands in high school. ‘Nude Star’ is from their debut LP, ‘Last Exit to Garageland’. It’s a spacie psych-rock number and great for rainy days.

This is NOT the sound of New Zealand Music Month…

This is NOT the Christchurch sound - Vol. 1
This is NOT the Christchurch sound - Vol. 1

Well it kind of is. I just thought I’d be a little controversial with my post heading. It’s NZ Music Month here in NZ so I thought I’d play some NZ music on Starlifter Radio. Actually that’s not true either, the kiwi tunes I’m playing on my little internet radio station are getting played because they’re fucking great and I’m really diggin’ them at the mo.

To start off with I’ve got the original “This is NOT the Christchurch sound” CD. It features songs on the Indie Rock to Electro spectrum from bands and artists such as Ed Muzik, Tom Cosm, Break Mission Kills, Charlie ASH, Pig Out, Get Set Play, The L.E.D.s, Tiger Tones, 5 1/2 Minutes, Electro Pussy Posse and more. We released it with RDU 98.5 FM in June 2007 to get some attention for all the local acts we thought deserved a little more attention.

Then we have my latest DJ mix ‘Interstella Week Beats Your Intergalactic Year”, a set containing electronic beats and grooves from LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, DIM, Uberzone, The Future Sound of London, Vinyl Life & Joey Beltram, Rocha + Lewinger, Underworld and Telefon Te Aviv.

And further on the Christchurch tip we’ve got tracks from Bang! Bang! Eche!, Hypercolour, No Aloha; Auckland cats Bandicoot; and Ex-Dunners now AK kats (I think) Brains.

There is also the latest from School of Seven Bells, these guys are amazing!

So that’s the go, there’s heaps more on there as well so be sure to tune into www.StarlifterRadio.com and get down with your bad elf.
