Stephen Farris – Alphabet Soup EP

Stephen Farris - Alphabet SoupNot a lot of hip-hop style electronic beats float past Starlifter these days but woah this shiz is mind blowing. Stephen Farris’s 3 track Alphabet Soup release is fascinating, neuron bending and simply happening. On ‘Leslie D’ the sound touches on the popular broken beat style without becoming a one-trick pony, a trait many of the songs in this style often possess. My favourite of the 3 is ‘Radio Drifter’ but then I am a sucker for glitches containing radio samples 🙂

Here’s the lowdown on Stephen Farris:
“Stephen Farris is a 20 year old beat maker, producer, and visual artist hailing from Houston, Texas. This soundscaper makes jams from forgotten synths, VHS tapes, and warped records of yesteryear. His inspiration comes from coincidences in nature, lucid dreams, and existence. He’s been collecting and sampling VHS tapes since he got his first sampler during his high school years. This is an aural and audible journey into the mind and soul.”

Benji from Muzai Records talks label stuff and the latest from The Postures

460>_3550508

Benji runs Auckland based record label Muzai, one of the most exciting labels to come out AK in the last few years. Some currently signed artists include Cat Venom, Full Moon Fiasco, god bows to math, and The Postures. Previous artists include Bandicoot and Kittyhawk to name a few.

In this interview Benji talks recent signing, The Postures, and what is it is like to run a record label in these crazy digital days.

I do apologise but this interview was recorded a few months ago so some of the discussion sounds a little out of place but I do hope you enjoy it all the same smiley

Peace,
Dr H

Sleepy Age – Sleepy Age EP

Sleepy Age EP - CoverBitter-sweet pop with lashings of rock and a wee bit of groove…

Sleepy Age are one of the best bands in Christchurch at the moment and their latest self-titled EP totally reflects this.

My favourite from this release is ‘Paul Simon’, a song which had Ross from local bar ‘The Dux de Lux’ grooving into the room during a soundcheck one day saying that it sounded like the Happy Mondays. At the time I don’t think Sleepy Age lead man, Josh Burgess, could see this comparison but I think I can.

I reckon Josh is an amazing song writer. His songs have good structure, interesting lyrics and a nice contrast between loud and soft.

Sleepy Age is a 3 piece band and was founded by Josh (ex Bang Bang Eche) who wrote music on his laptop to pass time in planes/vans/bedrooms. On returning to New Zealand Burgess transformed garage band demo’s into indie pop tunes with a full band. Sleepy Age also won RDU 98.5 FM’s 2009 ‘Round Up’ band.

Josh and the band are in the middle of a national tour so if they’re playing near your house be sure to check them out and you can also download the EP for free from their bandcamp page. Tour details and download details below…

Digitalism – Blitz

“Blitz” is a long awaited single from the electronic astronauts Digitalism, who have created a big bang theory of their own. It’s a synth supernova that explodes through the speakers, bringing with it a euphoric state of consciousness as we too look to the stars and while we may know there are far greater things happening within this moment, all you can do is dance.

It has been an epic journey, one that Digitalism are prepared to share, so strap yourself in and get ready for launch.

Out november 8th including remixes by Harvard Bass, Villa and one more original track !
